When do people visit Ashford?

People visit (or at least pass through) Ashford throughout the year, and there’s one principal reason for this – Ashford International train station, home to a stop on the Eurostar route through the Channel Tunnel, the only stop on the UK side that’s not in London. Service to Ashford is currently paused for 2022 and 2023, but all the infrastructure and capability is still there – so a resumption of service will also see the year-round flow of tourists and business users looking to either head to the continent or the UK via rail. In addition to this year round source of traffic however, hosts in Ashford can also rely on vacation visitors through the summer months too

Corporate Travel

The presence of Ashford International needs to be taken into consideration here – business travellers using the Eurostar to visit the continent from the southeast, or travellers coming from the continent on business trips to the southeast have the option of getting off the train at Ashford rather than travelling all the way into London and staying and commuting from there. Because of this, staying in Ashford is often a popular choice for travellers who find themselves in such a position, and hosts in the area can use this to their advantage.

Leisure & Tourism

The train station is a big part of Ashford’s appeal as a travel destination, it’s true – but that doesn’t mean that the town isn’t a tourist destination in it’s own right – as you’ll see below there are a wide range of different tourist attractions and other reasons to visit Ashford for pleasure rather than business.

Ashford’s central location also makes it a great place to stay if you’re looking to explore the county of Kent as a whole. In a similar vein to the business travellers we’ve spoken about above, if you’re travelling through the channel tunnel it can also make sense to stay in Ashford the night before you leave or the night that you arrive, and move on the next day too. Again, people choosing to do this give hosts in Ashford a steady source of inbound traffic in need of a place to stay in the short term – hosts that you can welcome into your property.

Attractions in Ashford

Victoria Park

In Ashford itself, there is a lovely green space just outside the town centre, Victoria Park, which dates back to the 19th century. The park is 17 acres and is a quiet place to go for a run along the river, have a picnic in finer weather or just to take a stroll.

St. Mary's Church

If you like history, then take a look at the beautiful mediaeval church, St Mary’s Church. There has been a church on the site for nearly 1000 years, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times! The current building has been standing since the 13th century. The church yard is surrounded by buildings dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. The church is in the town centre and is open to visitors from 10am everyday.

Willesborough Windmill

Another point of interest for historians is Willesborough Windmill, a restored and working windmill that celebrates its 150th anniversary this year! There’s a museum, cafe and shop inside, although it’s only open March-October.

Picturesque, Historic Kent

In the heart of Kent, Ashford is surrounded by lush countryside and quaint villages. It’s also only 38 minutes from London by train. Hosts of Airbnb property management Ashford should bear in mind that the town is only 15 minutes from Canterbury, home to the famous Cathedral. This could be a selling point for tourists. Canterbury has some of the oldest churches and buildings in the whole of England, clear from the picturesque cobbled streets and timber-framed Tudor buildings.

The Foodie Scene

When you’re hungry, Ashford has a good offering of pubs. Curious Brewery, just opposite Ashford train station, serve premium ciders and beers which are all produced on site. You can even book a tour. The Old Mill is a cosy pub dating  back to the early 19th century, serving traditional and modern food. Swan & Dog is another highly rated pub, located in a 16th century building in the Great Chart village, just outside the town centre. Great Chart village dates back to the year 762!

Ashford Designer Outlet

If you want a bargain, check out Ashford Designer Outlet, which houses 70 designer stores, a kids’ playground and dining options. If you want to see some wildlife, Port Lympne Safari Park is a 20 minute drive south of Ashford. You’ll see giraffes, gorillas, lions, bears, tigers, and the largest herd of black rhino in the UK!  The safari park is a people-pleaser for everyone, young adults and families alike.
